Peter Hess® Sound Massage

Peter Hess® Sound Massage is a gentle method of deep relaxation in which therapeutic singing bowls are placed on and around the body.

There is no direct manual touch in this method. The client lies fully clothed on a comfortable surface, covered with a blanket, while the practitioner gently activates the bowls.

Sound does not act only on the surface—it is experienced throughout the entire body, like a wave that calms the system, slows the internal rhythm, and supports the body’s natural regenerative processes.

The aim of sound massage is to restore the body to a state of balance and harmonious vibration, where mental tension softens and awareness becomes clearer and quieter.

In our practice of Peter Hess® Sound Massage, we have observed that even after one to two sessions, many clients report a significant reduction in chronic tension, especially in the back, neck, and shoulders. The effects of sound and vibration help the body gradually release on a deeper level, often resulting in a sense of relief, greater mobility, and reduced long-term muscular tension. While experiences vary from person to person, clients most often describe it as a profound sense of release and a feeling of a “lighter body” that continues even after the session.

Effect on Brainwave States

During sound massage, the brain naturally transitions into states of relaxation similar to meditation.

  • Beta state (14–28 Hz) – wakefulness, focus, analysis, but also stress and tension
  • Alpha state (7–14 Hz) – relaxation, calmness, gentle mental silence
  • Theta state (3.5–7 Hz) – deep meditation, creativity, daydreaming
  • Delta state (0.1–3.5 Hz) – deep sleep and regeneration

During sound massage, the alpha state most often dominates, with occasional entry into the theta state, allowing for deep relaxation of both body and mind.
