It is well known that in yoga practice, special attention is given to breathing. One of the many benefits of this is that, thanks to deep breathing synchronized with calm movements, the consumed amount of oxygen is continuously replenished, preventing any deficit. In the opposite case — when oxygen reserves were constantly at a minimum, as for example during exhausting exercise — lactic acid would accumulate in the muscle tissue, causing a feeling of fatigue and painful cramps after exercise.
Other benefits of conscious breathing in yoga are the calming of the mind, awakening awareness of presence in the moment — here and now — creating connection and harmony between mind and body, and maximizing the intake of vital energy with each breath.
Since for many who are beginning yoga or already practice it, the breathing aspect itself is very often challenging, I will give a few tips and reveal small secrets on how to master it.
Whether you practice in a group or alone, it is important to remember to bring your attention back to the breath whenever you notice you have lost it. To start, practice that part; pause if necessary or slow down your movement. Let the breath itself lead you into the next movement.
You can also add visualization, which is generally of great help in any activity. This visualization could reconnect you with your breath during yoga practice. On the inhale, imagine the breath entering through your nostrils, throat, and lungs. Imagine receiving that breath as a gift from the universe. With the same ease with which you received it, return that gift back on the exhale. Imagine that the gift you received, you are now sharing with the entire universe through the exhale.
The next time you step onto your yoga mat, try out these small secrets. Enjoy the refreshed feeling of your practice.
